DESCRIPTION OF  MY WAY OF WORKING

 

In my work, I try to perceive the truth and essence of nature by learning the material I use. Though all of my work begins with an idea, a spark kindled within, which begins as a thought and continues as a creative process, the journey is one of cooperation and collaboration of the artist with the material. Facing my material, which is usually stone, I attempt to listen to it, to interact with the material in a joint endeavor, a dialogue, a mental and emotional partnership.

I cannot face the material with force and strength alone, for the harder you push it the harder it may push back. I must instead intertwine with the material in the symbiotic relationship that is the creation of art. Together we discover ourselves and each other, flourishing and developing. Due to the complexity and length of the process, while the principle of the project remains the same, the idea is altered in conjunction with the stone and the artist.

Each stone must be understood, each has its own reality, its own qualities and characteristics which must be comprehended and thus harnessed in the path towards capitalizing on our connection, pushing the boundaries of what we are each capable of, testing the limits of the material and of myself as an artist.
